Where Record Snowfall Fuels a Snowmobiler’s Dream

By Gaylord Tourism

This past winter, Gaylord, Michigan earned its reputation as the Snowmobile Capital of the North in unforgettable fashion. The Alpine Village was blanketed by a record-breaking 204 inches of snow, setting the stage for one of the most spectacular sledding seasons ever. Situated 1,348 feet above sea level, Gaylord’s elevation and prime location in Michigan’s snowbelt means abundant snowfall year after year, but last season’s totals took it to a new level.

A Trail Network Like No Other

At the heart of Gaylord’s snowmobiling fame is an extraordinary network of interconnected trails radiating in every direction. The Gaylord Area Snowmobile Trails Council, a dedicated group of local volunteers, ensures these trails remain in pristine condition throughout the season. Their attentive grooming efforts keep the snow smooth, safe and ready for adventure.

From Gaylord, riders can explore routes that showcase the best of northern Michigan’s winter landscape:

Heading west from Gaylord, Trail #4 is a prominent route that leads riders through communities such as East Jordan and Mancelona. The scenery along this trail is a picturesque blend of serene forests and quaint towns, offering both excitement and tranquility.

• For those preferring an eastern route, trails extend through Johannesburg and Lewiston, ultimately reaching Millersburg and Onaway. This area is known for its expansive landscapes and well-maintained trails, perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in the up north experience.

Southern routes take you through the forests surrounding Frederic and Grayling. These trails offer a more rugged, natural experience, ideal for adventurous riders seeking to explore the wilder side of Michigan’s winter landscape.

• Another exceptional route is the North Branch, a trail system that offers an array of snowmobiling experiences. This route extends south to Kalkaska’s renowned Blue Bear Trail, westward through the densely wooded Jordan Valley, and east to Lewiston’s Lovells Trail. The North Branch also features multiple connector trails and access to expansive National Guard land, offering riders a chance to explore open-range areas not typically available on other trails.

• Perhaps the most exhilarating trail of all is the North Central State Trail. This 73-mile pathway, formerly a railroad corridor, takes riders through a diverse range of landscapes, including dense forests, open farmlands and picturesque towns. Along the way, these beckoning communities   provide essential services such as fuel, food and rest stops. The trail’s northern terminus at the iconic Mackinac Bridge offers access to the Upper Peninsula, should you choose to continue your journey.

If it’s your first time riding in the region, rest assured, you won’t get lost. Free snowmobile trail maps are available through the Gaylord Area Tourism Bureau and a variety of local businesses to help guide every turn.

A Community Built for Snowmobilers

It isn’t just the endless miles of winding white terrain that makes Gaylord a prime snowmobiling destination. Sledders can look forward to being greeted with up north hospitality around every turn. As Paul Beachnau, Executive Director of the Gaylord Area Convention & Tourism Bureau, puts it, “Our hoteliers are accustomed to working with snowmobilers and excel in accommodating their needs.”

That means more than just a place to stay. You’ll find trail-friendly lodging options ranging from cabins and full-service resorts to familiar hotel brands, many with direct trail access, ample trailer parking and steaming hot tubs for après-sled relaxation.

Local businesses rally behind the sport, too. The Sled Shed, Extreme Powersports and Mega Powersports offer a combination of expert service, parts, accessories and the latest models. Boathouse Marine & Powersports, Sledhouse Snowmobile Rentals and Snowbelt Motorsports make it easy for visitors to rent sleds and hit the trails in style. Gas stations conveniently located along routes are stocked with rec fuel to ensure your excursion doesn’t come up dry.
